People sometimes wonder how Jesus could have thrown in the towel in the last moment when he screamed on the cross, “My Lord, my Lord, why have you forsaken me,” shortly before dying. Eric Fromm rejected that perspective and pointed out that in Israel Psalms were often communicated in its entirety by uttering the first line. Psalm 22 in fact is an upbeat assertion of faith and victory as it concludes,
Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!
The Bible Psalms came to my mind the other day when I reflected on the workings of conditioning and the ego. It’s not very useful to claim we are the higher Self—we are the higher energies and vibrations when they flow through us. We are in an entirely different dimensions when the lower frequencies rule us, but when we aspire to be That instead. We are completely stuck at that moment. We have to understand the lower vibrations and let go of them.
The beauty of the Psalms is that they start out with the walk through the valley of the shadow of death and lead to the House of the Lord (Psalm 23). We first have to own who we are—the rainbow colors of human emotions—and then via insight and letting go enjoy the rainbow in its beauty and purity. For me a signpost of spiritual ascension is how quickly we can be the higher vibration after getting triggered into human conditioning once again.
Is it a few minutes, a few hours or more than a day? Either way, he has done it and so can we. Happy Easter!
