The Wisdom of the Crowds

As you perhaps know, American Idol has changed its rules in the 10th season and has eliminated a much larger number of contestants in the first round. I didn't like this concept when I first heard about it since I thought that the contestants should be given multiple opportunities to perform in front of the audience. To my surprise, the audience, with a little help from the judges, showed an amazing sensitivity to spotting the top talent. Exactly this point is made in "The Wisdom of the Crows", by James Surowiecki, a book which I highly recommend.

If your friends and colleagues always get you, you may as well become a straight shooter, and perhaps even more powerful than that, dig down deep and realize who you really are. Pretending to be someone you are not will not get you very far since the people you are with feel that something is off. Surround yourself with people you really like, since everyone will feel instinctively if you don't.

We are moving into a creative information society. Your creativity matters, as do your many interactions with your clients, friends and colleagues. Identify who you are deep down inside, find the creative contribution you can make to society and go for it. Just think of the joy and satisfaction if your ongoing personal development will be mirrored by your professional success.
