Your interpretations and labelling of your emotions decide how long theses emotion will stay with you. When you get involved with your emotions with your mind—the interpretations, judgments and labelling—you create more feelings and suffering for yourself to deal with, and they will stay longer or get stuck with you. Since you are indulging yourself with these emotions now, you are making stories out of them and make yourself even more depressed or angry; you are resisting it because you label it as bad, so you have to get rid of it. With your resistance, now they cannot leave and have to stay with you.
Instead, if you just experience them as they are, without labelling, differentiation, interpretation, these emotions are, in reality, just like clouds passing your system. When you embrace them with compassion, the real causes behind these emotions will then reveal themselves to you. You listen to these emotions with a pair of attentive ears, welcome them with open arms, feel them with your heart, sense them with your whole body, gaze at them like they are your lovers. Now with this total compassion and love, they melt into your loving presence and rest in peace.
