When thoughts pop up, just know about it. Don’t care too much about these thoughts. Don’t dig too deep into them either, just know that they are there. These patterns are the patterns we have experienced all of our life. They are all connected. Just know they are there. Don’t keep digging in the same issues in the old ineffective way.
Then it will become an analysis. Then it is not an observation. When you say to yourself, “this is not right, I shouldn’t be like this, I should behave like this; I discovered what I am not doing well, I should be like this”, this is not observation but a normative statement to yourself or a judgement. You judge how you should be. This is not an observation. So when you see some of your patterns, don’t take an attitude how you should be. Where judgement is, an observation is not.
So you have to observe your judgement. If you say to yourself, “You cannot behave like this. You must spend more time doing this and that”, you judge yourself. Then the door to observation is closed. When you start doing things you think you should do, this is not observation but indulging yourself in your thinking. So you have to observe your judgement. Because of your judgement, you will create a goal, then you create a conflict. Then you make an effort, and feel frustrated. So if you don’t observe your judgement, you will be sucked into this painful pattern. When you don’t understand your judgement, just observe your judgement. Observe it purely.
