Life’s murky choices

Our mind is treasure. But it’s very absorbed, so we must be very discriminating in what we hear, read and see. And in spiritual life, our fence is our ethics.

If we know we are living ethically to the best our ability, the mind will become peaceful.

The 19th century sage Sri Ramakrishna used to say that our mind is like a garden and that spirituality’s job is to keep the weed out. Yet, if we make ethics our sole guiding post we risk becoming rigid, perhaps even righteous. Life’s murky choices are there to show us what work is still left to let go of attachments, ambitions and afflictions. We are all headed for the ocean. The home-coming journey starts with numerous streams flowing into the river that one day merges with the body of the seven seas. Let’s take a good look around. Do we really live a flawless ethical life already? Is there still a little work ahead to sort out our affairs? It’s quite ok though; the struggle is designed to help us getting our self out of the Way. Rolling on the river, let’s see what tomorrow brings.
