The Illusion of Falling in Love

The Course in Miracles has a depressing commentary on our adored 'falling in love' feeling. It claims that every love on first, second or third sight is your ego falling in love with something not so loving. The Course in Miracles calls it the unholy relationship. Sadly, I have observed this statement to be true in myself; when I feel this burning sensation when I see, meet or interact with the opposite sex, I 'fall in love' with bodies, attitudes, status, expectations, etc. The good thing is - given that I am married anyway - once you realize this mental illusion, the burning sensation gets diminished somewhat. Still, it is amazing what the ego gets away with.

I hope you see the irony in the expression 'to fall in love'. How can the holy part inside ourselves fall in love, the holy part in us is in love all the time with all brothers and sisters. Falling in love is an oxymoron from the Holy Spirit's perspective.

The uplifting part of the Course in Miracle is that every relationship, though it may have started out with unholy thoughts, can evolve into a holy soul partnership if both parties put their best foot forward. Again, based on my experience I find this true as well. My wife and I are celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary, and I literally see our souls converging in front of my eyes. She has always brought out the best in me and every year our spiritual involvement is getting deeper.

Falling in love is what God is. Possessive love is what fear is.
