Consciousness is nothing but a filter. Faced with am infinite information flow you just put your staff into the sand and say "This is what I happen to focus on in this holy instant". When you highlight a text you are reading you are filtering out insights that are meaningful to you at this stage of your learning curve. When you are faced with something that is God-inspired, this is impossible to do.
I have a weird little hobby, I gather information from license plates. Every letter and number of the cars going by have a special meaning for me at that holy instant when the car passes by. I remember one day when I was standing in the middle of the road and information was hitting me with accelerating speed and meaning. I felt like falling into a vortex of information and finally had to cover my eyes because it got way too intensive.
Personally I think 'A Course in Miracles' is a God-inspired text. Reading it you either understand nothing or the meaning could be conveyed to a child. You can highlight passages only to find that if you re-read it a moment later you would zoom in on a different part. Weird stuff!
