Compartmentalization

Can you notice thoughts flashing up in your brain? Do you see how you are biased in everything you do? The problem is that our biases are all different, so that we have the feeling that we are on different planets when we talk about our preconceived notions. Next time when you are in a room full of people, watch out for the flashes in your head. "Oh, he is really short". "Man, those long legs are to die for". "Wow, he is really powerful"."How plain he looks". I guess you got the picture, and I am sure you have your own personal spin on the subject.

These compartmentalizations are really unfair, and often downright ugly, but at least when you know them, you can start compensating mentally when you meet and talk to the person you have sized up or down. I use mental affirmations that raise the person I have just mentally degraded. Sure, you face a couple of confusing seconds when, while you are conversing, the offsetting mind flashes hit the incoming biases head-on, but soon silence will set in and you can put all your attention on the actual person. Most importantly, spend time with the people you are artificially biased against - the better you get to know them, the sooner you realize how misleading your biases are. Your sister is here to help you discover her and heal you from your illusions. All you have to do is to look, unbiased by the loud voice in your head. When the mind becomes still, take a good look at her and be in for a surprise.
