A thought is not you. You must have noticed times when the stuff that rushed through your brain was in disaccord with what happened in your environment. You also must remember times when thoughts led you astray. A feeling is not you either. It must have happened to you that someone pushed your buttons and you reacted emotionally but unfortunately it was completely out of sync with what truly was going on.
So how can you experience the real you? Well, I don't know, but you can experience the observer in you who is one step ahead of your thoughts and emotions and is aware of both. Yesterday I had an odd realization in a conversation. A friend was telling me about her intention to change professions and I observed how she literally pushed a button in me. It felt good to jump on a thought train but while this happened I also realized how rigid it was to ride along a mental grove that was formed a long time ago. At this moment it struck me, 'no, this isn't me at all." The observer in you can stop you from going down this road of mental conformity.
The real you stands up when you interact with others. If you really trust the Tao to take care of you, you will approach every situation so openly that you will let the moment decide what you really think and how you truly feel. I have changed a lot over recent years. I used to have an agenda and ran with it even if that meant that I would be riding at full-speed into a wall. Today I have no agenda whatsoever. All I want to do is to dance with the environment I am in. The observer is busy, really busy at that creative moment. You observe thoughts, feel your emotions, study the others and even perceive how synchronized you become with everyone around you. A complete information, thought and emotion overload. In fact, this overload is so intense that all you really can do is to melt in the now. Surely, you must have experienced this creative moment yourself.
