That which seems like poison at
first, but tastes like nectar in the end, this is the joy of a mind at peace
with itself. Pleasure from the senses seem like nectar at first, but it is
poison in the end.
Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita
Somerset Maugham told
the final days of a friend in The Razor's Edge who was driven by socializing
with the upper society. Just a few days before his death he was invited to an
important social event and experienced a brief renaissance during these hours
only to collapse completely afterwards. He ended up spending his last day
complaining about some snubs he received from the Who is Who at that
time.
You have to run after what glitters on the horizon. For some it is
social status, for some it is professional success, for some it is finding
happiness in raising a family or physical relationships. For some it is even the
so-called enlightenment. You have your successes and you have your failures
along the way but hopefully you will always put your best foot forward and try
to get what you want out of life. Then some day it hopefully occurs to you to
look inside instead of outside and suddenly you have discovered the fountain of
happiness.
A spiritual journey is not about negating what you want, it is
about better understanding the feedback mechanism along the way. When you are a
Tao traveler you understand the upside in so-called failures and the downside in
so-called successes. Along the Tao there are no successes and there are no
failures. Everything that happens is perfect in synchronizing the demands of the
" I" today with what the " I" will enjoy at later stages of your journey. You
never have to negate anything within you but you are encouraged for every desire
you experience to look for the true gem hidden inside of it.
Follow the
signs of the Tao and let Her show to you that nectar is wherever you are. In the
Tao's hands you never have to fear time's decay. You can have peace of mind no
matter where you are and when. All you have to learn is that nectar is where you
are and never on the horizon.
