Ego feeds on attention. Actually, the ego needs your attention for his glory. If you observe yourself, you will find most of your activities, or drives are about getting attention and recognition. You work has to be seen, you dress up to be admired, your mansion looks effectively down on your neighbors, etc. Even your love for others as well as your humility can be there just for show. Pay attention to this and observe your intentions at play. Whenever your motives are about the recognition or attention of others, you put yourself into a trap. You want to be celebrated by others, but you are dependent now on them. Your emotions fluctuate with their reaction. You are not free and you certainly are not happy.
We are not telling you that you shouldn't strive to be good, enjoy your material abundance, show the best of you, or love others or being loved. On the contrary, we encourage you to experience all this and then some. Just be mindful of your motives. Know yourself, and do all sorts of things you love and for people you love or fall in love with. If you are satisfied and happy with who you are and what you do, you don't crave other people's approval. You are self-sufficient. When you have and know that you have, you are willing to share. In contrast, when you are insecure and aspire, you want to take away from others. Discover the abundance you possess and there is nothing to crave anymore.
