In a Friends episode, Monica started a relationship with someone who always seemed so upbeat. After a few weeks though, she and her friends realized the reason; he was in a perpetual state of drunkenness. Monica asked him to sober up, which he did, only to find that he was excruciatingly boring without alcohol so she had little choice but to dump him.

"With or without you" is borrowed from the U2 hit which rings true for anyone who is battling darkness on a spiritual path.
