Everyone who has children has probably observed that independent of our genes and upbringings, each child is somehow born with a idiosyncratic character and nature. The astrologers say that our character and nature is determined by the star positions we were embedded in at our time of birth. This is just another way of saying that all of us have signed up for a life journey well before we were born that is somehow written in the stars and thus effectively written in stone. Each of us has a soul contract that we are born to experience and to fulfill.
Ramana Maharshi states that only Consciousness is real and that everything else—soul, mind and ego—are mere figments of our self-identification. Still, our karmic obligations, cravings and dislikes are real to us and are hard to leave behind. It takes a lot of struggle with life itself and lots of spiritual maturity to break free from our ego and the life story itself. Jed McKenna had a nice description in ‘Spiritual Enlightenment the damnedest thing’; he said that when he came back from his ‘out of self-identification experience’ he picked himself to return to; it just seemed convenient!
Many books have been written on the soul, and many equate it with the Self, the idiosyncratic God Connection that all of us possess. It is just words as Ramana Maharshi rightly pointed out. We have a mission here on the blue planet earth that we come to fulfill. All of us experience this journey a little differently so let’s take a little time to enjoy what is in all that desire to leave behind our self-identification. The blue planet was created to awaken to our divine Consciousness, and just as in a massive divine mosaic there is a spot for all of us to awaken to what is here and now.
