Many of you know Don Miguel Ruiz’s 4 Agreements. It’s a nice roadmap to have for a spiritual journey:
Be impeccable with your word
Don’t take anything personally
Don’t make assumptions
Always do your best
My first rule of operation is ‘be authentic’. I can’t be impeccable with my word. I only know what I am saying when I say it, so I have no qualms going back to the person I used as a guinea pig a few days earlier admitting that I was smoking something when I said it. Authenticity is a completely different requirement though. After a little experimentation and adjustment, what we say, think and do has to be the same. Otherwise we have more adjustments to make. It’s the Way!
My second rule of operation is ‘don’t take your own story so seriously’. This morning I was thinking that there are so many stories of our loved ones, our friends and the people we shall meet one day. There is no way that we can know what happens in their lives, and how these stories intersect with ours, yet we pretend in our head that the world revolves around us. Have some respect for Her Work and trust that ‘what is’ makes a lot of sense whether we like our personal story at that time or not.
‘Don’t make assumptions’ is related to ‘don’t take your own story so seriously’. In the holy Now I mostly don’t think and assume, I just react to Her magic so for me this agreement is not quite as meaningful as the others.
‘Always do your best’, well, please do. That’s what a spiritual journey is all about.
