Only stillness counts

The moment I am aware that I am aware, I am not aware. Awareness means the observer is not.
J. Krishnamurti

‘If you think you think, then you only think that you think’ was a German song in the 70s. It reminds me of the mental acrobatics our spiritual community loves performing. We become aware of a voice in our head and think, ‘wow, that was ugly’ and believe that we have gained a higher plane of awareness. Everyone has this awareness, spiritual or not. It’s called consciousness, spelt with a lower case.

When I think of my own spiritual evolution I classify three stages, the time before 2008 when I was interested in spirituality, the time since 2008 when I realized a higher Power is in constant communication with me, and this year when I ‘experienced’ for the first time how the experiencer slipped away. There is no difference between these stages at all. I am still exactly the same person I always have been, but my awareness has changed.

Don’t get me wrong, when you feel that you are on a spiritual path, keep going. It is an insight to know when you are greedy, fearful, petty or arrogant. Keep observing and keep changing your life as you see fit. It’s an insight to know that all the plans the mind makes may not see the light of day as everything changes anyhow, or that the regrets of the past are misplaced because we clearly did the best we could at that time like every day.

Just don’t feel superior to anyone. The observer who judges the thought that bubbles to the surfaces is the same ego mind that calls others unconscious. This voice wrapped in spiritual clothes is an impostor. Only stillness counts. There is no observer, only the Beyond looking at Itself through us.
