Are you ready for freedom? (Continued)

Son, listen. These are the characteristics of devils. That which is called ‘devil’ is not some actual great big black thing that scares and petrifies whomever sees it. A devil is anything that obstructs the achievement of freedom. Therefore, even loving and affectionate friends become devils with regard to freedom. Most of all, there is no greater devil than this fixation to a self. So until this ego-fixation is cut off, all the devils wait with open mouths. For that reason, you need to exert yourself at a skillful method to sever the devil of ego-fixation.
 (Machig Labdron 1055-1154)

Feel that fear and do it anyway!

Watch that craving and see it fade!

Be one with that emotion and feel it move on!

See that train of thought departing into nowhere!

The path towards freedom is a little like the game ‘opposite day’. Carried by the energy of the moment we go after what we are afraid to do, just as we resist doing what we normally would get a kick out of. It’s hard to communicate this approach. It’s not stoicism. It’s not participating in the religious war of good and evil either. It’s ‘unitive living’ for a lack of a better expression. It’s following the energy of the moment sometimes with the ‘I’ coming along kicking and screaming. It’s a very serene trip as a matter of fact because all along we stand besides our self. As a matter of fact, it’s not even a road towards freedom, we already are free, one step at a time.
