Ego: from ‘having it your way’ to The Way

The introduction of reason into the ego’s thought system is the beginning of its undoing, for reason and the ego are contradictory. (A Course in Miracles)

My friend Timothy Wilkerson proudly told me that he didn’t use the confusing ego concept a single time when he wrote his book, ‘Awakening to Enlightenment.’ I followed his approach in my forthcoming book, ‘Breaking Free.’ A spiritual experience is really a state of ‘no self’ that we can all reach. It is beyond right and wrong, good and evil. The moment we introduce the concept of ‘ego,’ which properly defined is really the interference that stands between us and God, we are right back to the confusing concept of duality.

Yet, many newly awakened want to have a road map, so we cannot ignore the ego concept either. So is there a way to get our arms around the question if the ego shows up? Sure there is, just look out for the interference. One signpost of the ego is that it sounds logical but that it cannot be logical because it opposes God’s Oneness. There is a state of Knowing (Crown Chakra) that spots this inconsistency. There is a state of Heart Energy that can spot the fear and the lack of love, just as there is a Vision (Third Eye) that can spot the Oneness the ego is interfering with.

Spiritual living is the ability to perceive Oneness no matter whether the situation is perceived as good or bad. Soon we realize that our perceived foe will be as happy to tell us about our ego’s inconsistency as our friend is. We just have to be able to stand up to our hurt feelings and survive our shattered illusions and we will always be able to enjoy the Oneness that God has in store for each of us. Spirituality is not ‘having it your way,’ spirituality is the glimpse of The Way that brings us happiness once we put our self-imposed interference to rest.
