I have been blogging for 10 years now and my most frequently read posts are all on self improvement; on addiction, porn, over-eating, the seven deadly sins, and so forth. Clearly, these are the areas where people feel they could need the most help to turn their lives around.
I had an insight the other day. Isn’t the whole point of Awakening to leave the self behind so that we can enjoy what lies beyond that? Sure, we all want to enjoy the flow—the serendipity, the magic moment that takes our breath away—when the self slips away naturally. Yet, isn’t the time when the ‘I’ cries murder and wants to drown itself in mind-numbing activities the same priceless opportunity to jump off the treadmill called self?
So next time you go to the fridge, eye the corporate bonus or feel the fear creeping in, just observe the self in motion. Nothing more liberating that feeling the fear or the craving and stepping out of it.
