Make a change today

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.

Friedrich Nietzsche

The other day I bumped into a friend who has lost a lot of weight. He lives much healthier now, drinks less and exercises more. I asked him how he managed to cut his alcohol consumption and he said that now he drinks only on the weekends, whereas before he enjoyed his alcohol every day. He said that there was a little bit of struggle for a few days but that soon enough whenever there was no alcohol in the house he also refrained from buying it.

That is true for every habitual change. It takes a little effort to override old habits but after a few weeks it does get much easier. I didn’t ask my friend whether besides his weight loss and his desire to live healthier there was any other reason for him to moderate his alcohol intake, but I figure that there is always an important reason to push us over the edge to make a change for good. If there is an adjustment that you want to make I would focus on the ‘why,’ and the ‘how’ will come along.
