Paradoxically, it takes great humility to make peace with the fact that the ego will not be annihilated and will always remain with us in some measure.
It's interesting to see how tenaciously, how passionately, even how egotistically people insist that ONLY when the ego is annihilated will awakening be real.
Ego loves an enemy. Somehow it manages to commandeer the project of transcending ego by instead making ego the great enemy. That way, it gets to be the star of the show, even while pretending something else is going on. As long as one clings to the idea that "I must DESTROY the ego," ego still has the upper hand.
Once the role of a healthy ego in a well integrated, mature awakening has been appreciated and accepted, the ego can begin to settle down and cooperate. Then ego ceases to be such a problem and the idea that the ego must be destroyed loses its sway.

I have met a few folks in the spiritual community who exude
S (erenity)
E (nergy)
L (ove)
F (low)
Maybe they have simply made peace with all aspects of their being so that finally S E L F can shine forth. Maybe we should start sharing our quirks to give others the confidence to accept who they are on the soul level instead of fighting it.
