God doesn’t hide, we do!

 Blessed are those who have meaningful work,

and those who have a steady income,

and those who have healthy bodies,

and those who feel loved;

The list could go on for a while, meaningful hobbies, travel, a fulfilled sex life, a nice place to live, nutritious food to eat, and much more. Overall happiness depends on our unique preferences. We all differ when it comes to what exactly gives us life satisfaction, but we all know in the end whether we have it or if it seems to elude us. Some have seemingly everything but feel miserable when they are honest enough to admit it to themselves and others, while others have seemingly so little but exude serenity, love and happiness. Money can’t buy happiness, only a working life philosophy can give us meaning and satisfaction.

A spiritual journey is essentially a quest for contentment and happiness. No external goal truly satisfies in the end, while finding the serenity and love within cuts the dependence on the outside word. So many claim to be enlightened but you can always see the extent of the peace and happiness they carry within. Not just on the day of the lecture, or after some well-prepared meditation, but all the time. Like the ending scene in ‘It’s a wonderful life’, this switch can happen instantaneously, almost independent from external circumstances.

The gurus and teachers differ on the how to get to this blessed state. My favorite advice is from the New Testament, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added.” Seeking and finding happiness in the external world doesn’t do it, we have to find serenity, love and happiness inside. Renouncing our desires for external things in the name of spirituality also doesn’t do it. We have to spot Oneness and divinity in the vibrant life in front of us. We have to find God to be truly happy. But the good news is that God does not hide, we do.
