Awareness—Take another look!

We cannot simply say, “Thoughts and emotions are like waves. Watch them rise and watch them fall—just don’t identify with them.” Why don’t we have this power of equanimity? Because thoughts and emotions are “presents” from the subconscious reminding us of where we can still do a better job of letting go.

There is Awareness though—the dimension these thoughts and emotions arise in—and we do occasionally have these samadhi states that allow us to be part of that Force rendering the subconscious empty in that blessed state.

What to do when the “human” energies have returned? We can focus on “suchness”. Life has an energy to it what we can be aware of and follow. With “suchness” in front of us, thoughts and emotions fail to take over the driving seat.

There is also “suchness” within. A rising thought and emotion can be watched without judgment—with an equanimous mind—just like seeing a wave rise from the deep sea and fall back into it without ever have affected the deep sea.

How can we become perceiver of “suchness” both within and without? It’s a switch of sorts. I cannot claim that I am Awareness—that’s an act of Grace. I cannot claim that I can always perceive “suchness”—the subconscious is too powerful for that—but I can become mindful when the thoughts and emotions have once again taken over the steering wheel. That’s when there is an opening to take another look.
