My music collection is a curious thing. Nothing special, just popular songs accumulated over the years, if not decades. I remember the days when I put my favorite 5 CDs in my Sony CD player on a lazy Saturday morning and danced to it with our oldest son in my arms. This must have been about 12 years ago given that he too turns 14 soon. Then came Apple along with its random music choice of my existing library of songs and from that day on ‘destiny’ has been in charge when it comes to choosing these songs.
A song is like a meme. It has a subconscious or conscious messages for us dependent on whether we carefully listen to the lyrics or not. Every song stirs up memories for us. The energy of the song will always speak to us whether we carefully listen to the lyrics or not. Actually, there is nothing ‘random’ about Apple’s song selection. Did you notice that two songs never follow each other? Actual ‘randomness’ would have that occasionally. The collection is carefully designed so that the energies and genres of the ensuing songs are always connected. They lull you into a stream of songs so to speak. I am sometimes a bit picky when it comes to choosing the first song, but I noticed that once the songs are playing, I rarely change them.
There are the times when we are so engaged doing what we are doing that we don’t even register what song is playing, even though subconsciously we are of course carried by its energy. Then there are the conscious moments when Lionel Richie’s ‘Easy’ is playing and I smilingly acknowledge that that is exactly how I feel, or the more stormy ones like Gary Allan’s, ‘Every Storm runs out of rain’ when I feel a bit out of it. Yesterday a member of the Spiritual Intellect Community poured her heart out telling us about her Divine messengers such as music, nature, license plate numbers, etc, and also confessed in the same breath that her marriage of 30 years was falling apart. I replied to her that at the moment when I was reading her message Gary Allen’s, ‘every storm runs out of rain … it sets you free’ was playing. To her that very serendipity proved very meaningful.
I believe—nay, I know—that every song on the radio or in my ‘random’ collection is chosen for us every moment. There is nothing random in this Universe. When the spiritual path opened up to me, I got countless messages from songs. The frequency with which these meaningful songs reach me has eased in recent years, but some messages continue to be the gospel for me. As I finish this note, LeAnn Rhymes’ ‘Amazing Grace’ is playing. True, what an amazing grace it is to walk the Way!
