Someone who gets lost watching nature, or a friend who listens intensely to every word you say. The lover who melts in the arms of his beloved, or a parent who watches their children play for hours. These are examples of operating without center—pure spiritual being in the here and now.
In contrast, the seeker who watches his thoughts has a center. He identifies himself with being spiritual; so does the aspirant who tries to meditate his mind into submission. It’s a centered activity as there is still the observer commenting on how quiet her brain has become.
The real meditator floats in emptiness, the non-duality master disappears in oneness, and the faithful religious follower receives Grace. Who can say how to lose our center but appreciating the spiritual moments and being mindful of the center—even if seemingly spiritual—is all we can do.
