Radiate Your Own Light

When I lived up on the mountain, I never turned on the lights at night. My younger brother once asked me, “Why don’t you turn on the light? It’s so dark—why are you so strange?” To him, it was too dark to see anything. But I could see everything clearly. I felt that I was a being of light—and so were others.

After years of observation, I noticed that there is light around everyone’s crown area, about the width of our outstretched arms. Everyone radiates light—even cats and dogs. But each being’s light is different.

I often speak with people whose light is very bright, and I find something they all have in common: their hearts are pure and complete. What they think about is how they can benefit others. In contrast, I observe that people who always want to take advantage of others, who get angry easily, or who are filled with fear tend to have very dim and dark light.

If you constantly believe that others are wrong, that they owe you an apology, that everything is someone else’s fault—and you allow these thoughts to drive you without pausing to examine them—you will be led by habitual patterns, and your world will take on that same quality. When you think only of yourself and blame others, your light becomes weak, and people naturally keep their distance.

So, what kind of world are you living in? Isn’t your world simply a reflection of the contents of your own thoughts?

True learning, spiritual practice, and awakening begin in ordinary life. We don’t need to seek them deliberately. All we need is to pay attention. Enlightenment can be found in every small thing.
