Student:
I can see that I like to play the role of the suffering victim. I tend to immerse myself in feelings of grievance and unfairness.
Suzhen Liu:
Deep down, you believe that this is what brings you comfort and peace, and that it somehow makes you worthy in the eyes of those you feel you have wronged. It is these interpretations that create suffering for yourself.
You feel that only by enduring hardship and punishment have you paid your dues. Some part of your consciousness believes that if you suffer enough, the mistakes of the past can be redeemed.
This is simply one of our beliefs, and more often than not, it is not true.
There is usually a pattern of thinking operating beneath your awareness. Because you cannot clearly see it, you become trapped in it. You believe that only through sacrifice or suffering can you feel justified, at peace with yourself, and deserving of love.
Yet all of this is a game you are playing with yourself. Even when love is offered to you, these patterns continue to repeat. Because they are not the truth, you can never truly receive the love you seek.
The reason is simple: it is not a fact—it is only a belief.
All it does is drain your energy. No matter how much you do, it will never bring you to the destination you are hoping for. And so you continue endlessly trying to atone.
Sometimes a single event or a single sentence can be interpreted in hundreds of different ways. We become attached to one interpretation and spend our lives exhausting ourselves within it.
