The Paintings of a Lover and the Buddha

Last year we stayed at the Sheraton in Delhi where I saw a remarkable collection of glass work paintings in the lobby. Two paintings next to each other caught my attention. They were actually quite simple, but had a very powerful spiritual message. The first was the classic Indian theme of the two lovers making out in the desert. Next to it was the Buddha in his classic meditation pose. The sexual energy in both paintings caught me immediately. In the case of the lover, the sexual energy was portrayed as a big sword that pointed away from the man towards the woman. You could feel how this energy was just about to flow out of him. In The Buddha pose, the energy was sent straight up his spine and into his illuminated mind. A perfect recycling of energy.
