The African Painting

When we visited family in California the other day, I was fascinated by a painting my brother-in-law had brought back from Africa. It shows the picture of an African woman sourrounded by symbols of dominance, submission, holiness and fear. The woman is in the middle of all this and somehow appeared peaceful. I must have spent hours in front of it trying to discover its spiritual message. Perhaps it is as simple as this: keep an eye on everything, the lust for power, the occasional lapses into submission, the lingering fears as well as the daily glimpses into heaven. As you keep an eye on the entire picture, without being swayed into any particular mood, your tension suddenly freezes and you just are, free and peaceful and above good and evil.
