The Symbol of Sickness

My father in law wanted us to get children, so at a time when my wife was quite sick he prayed that he would gladly shoulder her illness if only she could become better again. Well, in due course my wife got better and we were also blessed with two beautiful boys, but unfortunately he developed asthma. You may say that he had cursed himself while he had helped curing her, but I think that he probably would have developed asthma anyhow. As it turned out, his medical conditions have vastly improved in the meantime and fortunately most of the time his sickness is in remission.

When Sai Baba of Shirdi wanted to propel the spiritual journey of a disciple he took on his karma and fell violently sick. A group of medical examiner were called and they all collectedly decided that he was dying. Five minutes before Sai Baba was scheduled to give a sermon, he asked for some water, sprinkled it over his head and body and got up to give his speech. The sprinkling of water was a symbolic act of cleaning and his mind had decided that he was now cured again, and he was.

Don't get me wrong, medical conditions are real on one plane of consciousness, but they are also a symbol for something being out of line spiritually. When you get sick, always ask for the symbolic meaning of why as well as the how. I developed an ear infection last summer. While it is mostly in remission, I sometimes feel a little pressure and I am mostly able to link this condition to my spiritual path. An illness is a symbol that something is not right, so please look for the adjustment and the healing will come in due course.

Whether you are spiritual advanced enough to heal your illnesses mentally I can't tell. I never bother trying to heal myself, I just enjoy my uncanny ability to spot the symbolic meaning of every sniffle in my system. What I know I can do is to cut all spiritual impurities out of my life. A medical condition is just a reminder to try again. Trust that you are whole and trust that you are healthy. You can leave the treatment up to our excellent doctors, but you can greatly aid them in the healing process by your whole Self to shine. May peace be with you!
