Ego Versus Spirit

It is not always easy to say what is of the ego and what it is of the spirit, but in some cases it is pretty clear: the business person who strikes a deal with another one for the first time is perhaps more driven by rationality, while the mother who holds her baby in her hands is more driven by the spirit. Most of the time, however, mind and the heart go hand in hand and we just don't know what the underlying driving force is any longer. The business person who has spend decades together with his colleagues. While he needs the paycheck, he also knows that his colleagues have become his family as well. The opposite example is the preacher who means well but deep down inside loves the status that comes with his mission, or the healer who goes out to to heal the world, not knowing that he needs healing himself.

In the table below I distinguish between what the underlying driving force of your action is and the way you see the world.

                                                         Observed Reality

                                                    Ego         Spirit

                              Ego             Rationality          Unhealed
Underlying                                                         Healer
Drive
                             Spirit               Illusion Heaven on Earth

Few of us are truly of the spirit so that they truly create Heaven on earth. And when these enlightened folks  interact with the real world, they manage to see right through its empty structure, always having an eye on the beautiful world lying beneath.

As a Tao traveler I would say, it doesn't really matter what your underlying motive is, it is all useful for your soul development. The driven business man or politician will eventually discover the spirit world whereas the mistaken preacher or healer will eventually learn that they need  their congregation or patients as much for becoming whole as it is the other way around. Walk your path however you like, the true underlying reality will catch up with you sooner or later.
