Choices

Let what comes come, let what goes go. Why do you worry?
(Sri Ramana Maharshi)

When you want your body to be in great shape, perhaps it is not a good idea to drink so much alcohol, eat excessive junk food, or quit your exercise program. When you want to be in a committed marriage and raise your children with the family values you believe in, perhaps it is not a good idea to go all by yourself into a bar at night on a lonely business trip and get drunk.

Walking a spiritual path is realizing that no matter what to do, and where you are, you always face a similar situation and choices. It is not so much your environment that shapes you, it is you yourself who attracts all the events and people into your life. Once you hit this realization, you can take all the anxiety out of life's events. Change yourself, and you change the world that surrounds you. Yet, you still need to decide what you what you want from life in which direction to proceed. You are the creator of your destiny. Have your eyes on your desires, be committed, cut out all interferences and go after them. All you have to to is to figure out what you really want. After that, no one can stop you but you yourself.

If you want to be close to God, perhaps it is a good idea to surround yourself with loving friends and colleagues, and spend your leisure time in meditation, contemplation or surrounded by nature. The mission of a spiritual traveler is to increasingly realize that nothing really matters, yet, everything does. You have an eye out for God while you get your earthly stuff done. Catch Her glimpse and all struggle and strife immediately ceases in Her Presence. Holding Her Hand, your other desires melt like butter in the summer sun.
