Craving, Desires and Authentic Needs

Cravings are a waste of our precious energy. Indulging in them is like drinking sea water to relinquish our thirst. So what can we do but to patiently bear them. Say we want to lose ten pounds and while we stick to our nutrition and exercise plan we keep thinking about pizza, beer and wine! Nothing really that we can do about the problem statement except to flex our mental will-power while focusing on more uplifting things.

Our desires are us. We have conscious desires that we try to go after, and we are subconsciously driven by stuff that we know little about. Retrospection and mindfulness are ways to become more conscious and potent in what we do. At the end of the day though, we have to decide how hard we push to get them materialized. When we push too hard we start stepping on other people’s shoes, and we might also abuse ourselves in the process. When we strive to little, life will keep exposing us to our unfulfilled dreams.

GOD has created us to gain spiritual insights but not to make us suffer. A spiritual path will encourage us to go after our authentic needs, be it the love in our life, a professional mission, or whatever else it is that makes our heart jump. We certainly can face obstacles to get what we desire, but these choices define us and end up making us the person we are born to become. Cravings, accept and ignore them. Desires, understand them, and authentic needs, express them!
