The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego, the second half is going inwards and letting go of it.
(C. G. Jung)
As a spiritual coach I talk to some folks who desire to have peace of mind and be with GOD, but my advice is sometimes different. I say, “go out and conquer the world”, or, “get a life coach before you start your journey HOME”. We all have a mission to complete, a Soul longing we are born with: to become the hero, the scientist, the mother, the healer, the entrepreneur, or the artist. First we have to express our GOD-given talents, something that the ego feels proud of, and later we let go of it. The psychologist C. G. Jung called the growing-up phase individuation, which is followed by our HOME coming. Sure, we spiritual coaches can help along the entire journey, but the individuation phase has to come from you.
First we discover what makes us potent and special, then we discover the ability to see this magnificence in everyone. GOD’s KINGDOM is the interaction of all soul siblings who are all special in their own GOD-given ways. Many ambitious young spiritual seekers want to skip the individuation part because it offends their spiritual notion that we should strive for specialness. Yes, you deserve peace of mind, and yes GOD wants you HOME, but unless you allow this individuation process the ‘shadow side’ within will cause havoc: the craving for wealth, status, and power, not to mention steamy sex. The smoothest way to deal with the shadow side is to fulfill all authentic needs in a spiritually kosher way.
It is fine to acquire wealth. It is important to develop a trade, or a talent. It is advisable to get a degree, or to start a business. Everything that is designed to express our GOD-given talents is worthwhile going after. Finding love and physically expressing it is guaranteed along the WAY. I can’t promise you riches, but if you truly go after your GOD-given talent, meaning and fun will always be at your side, and poverty is not something you need to worry about. Express who you are and let GOD celebrate you in a way that is meaningful to you. The journey is uphill in the individuation phase, but soon we learn to follow the beat of the WAY. The HOME coming journey is downhill. Life merely flows through us.
