If you are happy and you know it ...

And now I'm singing along to amazing grace.
Can't nobody wipe this smile off my face.
Got joy in my heart, angels on my side,
thank God almighty, I saw the light.
(Something in the water, Carrie Underwood)

There are folks who live paycheck to paycheck with a smile on their face, and there are multi-millionaires who are miserable when they find out that their tax bill is going up. When you truly observe what is going on, there is a baseline happiness—or misery— that we always revert back to independent of the circumstances that we are in. We feel as we feel, and the voice in our head comes up with a convenient story explaining to us why we supposedly feel as we do.

A spiritual path is a journey towards peace of mind, towards purpose, and with it, often happiness. We also fluctuate in our experience from the more pleasurable moments to the less satisfactory ones, but there tends to be a baseline peace of mind feeling, a frequent twinkle in our eyes, and often a tune on our lips.

What a revelation! Just ignore the annoying voice in your head and zoom into the way you feel instead. Accept it, be one with it, and stand ready for the spiritual upgrade to step out of your movie plot. Chances are without that voice in your head you will be just fine.
