We hear often spiritual travelers ask about beautiful number sequences, or other meaningful occurrences that are just too frequent and connected to be random. So they naturally ask what that is all about. My response to this question is always that synchronicity is an initiation of sorts. The Beyond is making contact with us and we are invited to learn a new language. Numbers are captured by the ‘science’ of numerology. Animals, objects, and people are interpreted by psychology and shamans. Spiritual phenomena are captured by the understanding of our different faiths, and so forth. In short, an amazing spiritual quest is about to launch for everyone who wants to engage. ‘Synchronicity—enjoy the ride’, is perhaps the best advice we can give when someone Awakens to the synchronicity phenomenon.
Two questions come to mind when synchronicity first pops up, ‘how does this happen, and what exactly do we do with it’? The answer to the how is simple, though it is hard— if not impossible— to understand for the scientific mind. There is a World beyond the world we are living in. A World that will never interfere with our linear, rational world, and sometimes cruel world. While we live in the world that our logical minds expect to encounter, we are trapped like the sleepers in the movie Matrix. Yet, our situation is not as dismal as the movie makes it appear. Some of us have regularly broken free. The enlightened folks; the poets and artists as well. Everyone can! In fact, that’s what the beautiful strings of numbers and other meaningful coincidences are all about. A wink from the Universe to take another look at what is truly going on. Yet, it is just an initiation of sorts. There is so much more to follow. Eventually everyone can discover a spiritual eye to see, and the loving heart to grasp this new World. We don’t need numbers and impossible ‘coincidences’ to experience this new World.
The answer to the second question, what exactly should we do with it, is entirely up to us though. I remember when my spiritual path opened up, I received spiritual and real life messages in form of Massachusetts license plates. I was naturally inclined to use them. Well time market calls, auspicious lottery ticket purchases, meaningful connections with other people, and so forth. I had fun with synchronicity, and had a decent track record using this information. Yes, we can use the Law of Attraction to our personal benefit, but we can also use these messages from the Beyond merely to advance along our spiritual path. At the end of the day, that’s what I have decided to do, but I also respect the choice of the self-help folks who feel emboldened to share ‘The Secret’ that this world is our oyster. As the saying goes, many paths lead to Rome—or in our case—Home.
James Redfield made synchronicity popular in the spiritual community with his bestseller, ‘The Celestine Prophecy’. In it, the synchronicity concept became so much more than just meaningful number sequences or strange “coincidences”. His book argued that in its limit, the law of synchronicity says that every interaction, every conversation or event is GOD speaking. It tells us what to do and let the Path give us purpose and spiritual meaning. That’s how I live my life these days. I follow the Signs that come my way, and just instinctively do what I am meant to do. As the 13th century Sufi Mystic Rumi once put it, “if everyone is GOD speaking, why not be polite and listen?”
In my books I simply refer to the Way. Everything that happens to us, and everyone we meet is a meaningful part of the Way. Synchronicity in this approach is merely an alert of sort to take interest and engage accordingly. I start my forthcoming book, ‘The Way of the Meister’ with a cute synchronicity story just to demonstrate how much fun we can have along the Way. I was on my way back to my office after a lunch break and noticed a car passing by with the license plate MARION. That surprised me because the only person coming to my mind was a colleague working in London and we weren’t scheduled to work on anything together. I passed the street and was just about to enter the building when I felt a vibration from my phone. As I checked it I saw a calendar invite from Marion to meet as she was planning a trip over to Boston.
The beauty of this story that there was absolutely nothing material that came of it; it was just an affirmation that everything is on track. So synchronicity can be an energy boost of sorts. It happens often to me that I make a decision, or think about something that is important to me, and as I glance at the phone at that moment, I see the well-familiar 11:11 smiling at me. The Beyond is saying, ‘go ahead, you are doing well. You have Divine support!
The German quantum physicist Werner Heisenberg once said, ‘The first gulp from the glass of natural science will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom GOD is waiting for you.’ That is it really! The Beyond is making its Presence known to us, in one way or the other. With GOD nearby with every step we take, what is there to fear? What is there to wish for? If you are one of the lucky ones who has been initiated, have fun with the Way. You are embarking on a journey that takes many years, and likely decades. The Beyond prepares you for a World beyond your wildest imagination. Synchronicity—Enjoy the ride!
