Peeling the Onion

Make no mistake about it—enlightenment is a destructive process. It has nothing to do with becoming better or being happier. Enlightenment is the crumbling away of untruth. It’s seeing through the façade of pretense. It’s the complete eradication of everything we imagined to be true.

Life peels us like an onion; work successes and slumps, the ups and downs of our love life, the coming and going of friends, etc. We used to think that these occurrences are random but now we realize that there is order behind the chaos.

Awakening is the realization that we can do the peeling ourselves. We forgive, let go of the past, and stop falling for the carrot dangling in front us. Layer by layer gets shed until finally we grasp the movie we are in and move on to the next chapter ourselves.

Is there is still a restlessness inside of us, let’s do something creative with it. If there is a fire burning, let’s express our passion to the best of our abilities. Many of us are caught in a twilight zone, with one foot in the real world and the other in God’s Kingdom.

Peeling the onion we must, or watch helplessly how life shakes us up to scratch off the skin that we have increasingly outgrown. That’s what an Awakening journey is all about. So let’s be a little proactive and move with the flow instead of resisting it.

One day feelings and thoughts will pass by like clouds on the blue sky. With nothing left to prove and nothing left to say we drift like a kite in the autumn wind. It is useless to speculate how we experience the Core when all layers are shed. Let’s live today fully.
