I remember a Friends episode when Monica fell in love with a guy who was well-liked by everyone, and who was always happy to spread the cheer, especially when alcohol was involved. One day it occurred to her though that he may be an alcoholic and when she confronted him about it he tried to accommodate her by stop drinking cold-turkey. The only problem though, while sober, it turned out that he was boring as hell, so she had little choice but to dump him.
To be free from addiction is important, but it’s not the freedom that is at our disposal. To the contrary, sometimes this freedom shows up when the urge is rampant to open that bottle, or by waking up at 2 am in the morning feeling the floor spinning underneath. The moment of freedom is always out there, in anger and fear as much as in every loving and serene moment. Spiritual living may be a good start for stumbling on happiness, but only freedom gets you there.
