If a person really wants to loose weight, he must be sold on the idea of getting rid of the habit of overeating that has been serving as compensation for tensions and unfulfilled needs.
(Dr. Robert Anthony)
We can beat addictions with the help of support groups. We can beat compulsive habits with will-power. No method is fool-proof. Support groups and the 12 step program open the sufferer up to the positive energies of love and spirituality. Will-power forces the addict to muster all remaining energies towards the goal of leaving the cravings and neediness of the old compulsive habit behind.
The true break-through to the next level of consciousness occurs when we understand what hole this habit tries to fill, and choose to live with the pain of emptiness and void rather than filling it. In the case of over-eating, it’s not hard to see that we want to munch our anxiety and depression away. To paraphrase Susan Jeffers’ ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway,’ our motto becomes ‘face the void and embrace it.’
Insight is a sign-post of higher consciousness. The process of letting go is the way to advance our spiritual quest. Just observe your cravings and what they truly stand for. Just be one with the restlessness and the void, resisting the urge of running from it. A support group may open a new spiritual world up for you, will-power may be the jolt that gives you the groove back, yet it is self transformation that brings you Home.
