I stood there, hugging my mattress, and smiled with happiness…. “Are you from freedom?” they asked me. ALEKSANDR SOLZHENITSYN
Feelings are feelings. A little boy may feel happy kicking a soccer ball in the poor neighborhood of San Paulo, while a rich kid floating in an infinity pool in Malibu can feel lonely and depressed.
A spiritual journey often starts when people can’t find happiness anymore with the job they do or the people they hang out any longer. ‘There must be another way,’ they say and that’s when they look for a new approach.
‘Follow the positive energy,’ our spiritual books say, ‘and avoid the negative,’ as if we didn’t try to do all our life. Change jobs, walk out of friendships and family and nothing changes, would be my hunch. We take the feelings right with us.
No, the revolution lies in the word freedom not happiness. Happiness is a consequence of freedom. Freedom is the ability to let go of the stuff that is holding us back. It’s the ability to see the situation as is as a jumping board to be free.
Be free of the guy who wants something. Be still and discover what lies below the surface. You are already free. Take a good look around. Do you see?
