We are unconscious in the traditional sense when we have to awaken to a plot that seems to be beyond us, people taking advantage of us; we stumble from one love affair to the other, we have the compulsion to boss others around, etc.
We are unconscious in spiritual sense if we identify with what we do, being a parent or a boss, a lover, a healer or a teacher. True freedom is stepping psychologically out of all roles even though we may still have to do them.
When Ramana Maharshi sufferered from cancer, he shrugged his shoulders and said that the body does what it does. His body didn’t constrain him. Similarly, we may be married, parents, bread-earners, but our role doesn’t define us either.
When we share our observations of what lies beyond self identification, we are essentially poets, not lecturers. Some of my colleagues still give talks how to be free. What a waste! Let’s hang out with each other and enjoy freedom instead.
