The magic of the moment

I was driving yesterday to a golf game and it was raining buckets. The weather forecast suggested that the system should have passed by the time I arrive and it did. With a delay of some 20 minutes I was on the course and the sun was out again. The beauty was stunning. It seemed like the trees and nature were vibrating with joy. No camera, not even an impressionistic painter could have captured the magic of the moment.

I presume that most children perceive this natural state most of the time, whereas we are too busy, too worn down by agendas we carry around to notice. Spirituality is going back to this prestige state—to the magic of the moment—and be able to live and express it. That must be Jesus’ reference, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

How do we return to this innocence, and why can’t every day be like Christmas? I would start with watching. Seeing the signs of Grace that surround us all the time; being mindful of the drives, the fears, the aspirations that separate us from that prestige state. We cannot consciously catapult ourselves into a state beyond self, but we can become mindful whenever we interfere with the love, serenity and beauty that accompany us.
