The four stages of spiritual evolution

The unaware state is when we don’t even acknowledge our cravings and aversions and are bounced around by life like a ship on the sea in the storm.

We are also unaware of the spiritual dimension when we consciously go after our desires—or ran away from our fears—and can’t see beyond our two feet.

The next stage of spiritual evolution is when we are aware of a higher dimension of being, and with self-awareness work towards love and serenity.

Problems still abound in the self-aware state for the very reason that these problems are designed to help us realize when the self is at work.

Serenity emerges in the third stage of spiritual evolution. Sense-objects still create desires and aversions, but we have the wisdom to spot self at work.

Say we see a fancy sports car and we admire it for its beauty, and when the thought, “I need to have it” arises, we let it run without joining the chase.

In the third stage we act when it is worthwhile, but otherwise choose being over doing. There is still a little mental struggle, but the waters are calm.

The last stage of spiritual evolution is when even the sense objects can’t get to us. There is no us to speak of. The world spins while we sit at its center.

We experience life as modern wo(man) in the first, start the spiritual quest in the second, and become a sage in the third. The last stage is enlightenment.
