On my recent trip to LA the phone beeped early in the morning. The flight was delayed. On the road to the airport, I had the choice between a 30-minute layover in Austin on an already delayed flight or rushing through heavy traffic with an estimated 40-minute window to reach an earlier flight. There was a sparkle in the driver’s eyes, “you are in a hurry?”, he asked. I bet on his maneuvering skills and made the change. He was fast, and amazingly, the traffic thinned the moment I had made the decision to reroute the trip.
I arrived in time, and a look at the outcome of the original flight made me laugh. Yes, the flight to Austin was delayed even further, but I would have made it anyhow as the connecting flight was delayed as well. Still, the switch gave me peace of mind. Did I really make this decision by myself? The eager Uber driver made the decision for me. Life provides the little cues, and we show up for the ride. Equanimity of mind is knowing that what is meant to will be, and what isn’t, isn’t, as long as we put our best foot forward.
I am not saying that we always make the right decision. I am also not saying that the universe always conspires in our favor. Yet, I am saying that we don’t need to sweat the apparent fork in the road. We do not operate in a vacuum, only our mind and the feeling of being alone in an unforgiving universe fear that way. And even if we feel caught in-between the famous rock and the hard place, that’s always a perfect opportunity to spot the self involvement buried in the decision. Us it to spot the self at work!
I have used the B-M-W acronym before—body-mind-world. This world wraps itself around us and expresses what body and mind conjure up as a learning opportunity and wake-up call. Decision points are designed to help us reconnect with what lies beyond. So next time around you feel that you are sweating a decision, take a deep breath and with an open mind, open eyes and an open heart let go and join the flow.
