Shadow boxing

Richard Burton said in an interview on alcoholism, “you are always fighting, and the other fellow is booze. You are evading him, but one of these days he is going to nail you, right on the chin.”

When I listened to him, I thought to myself, how is that any different from our struggle with the ego. Our mind and self-identity will always be triggered, reminded, and jump into action.

Then it occurred to me that in contrast to an addiction where every relapse is indeed painful, the ego struggle is surreal instead. When we awake to self in action we realize, our ego is merely shadow boxing.

It took me the longest time to get this, Awareness is. Everything else is imagined, dreamt up just like the mistaken snake for the rope. It takes one insight; one alignment and the shadow boxing show is over.
