“Sex impulse and fame are the principal obstacles. Though apparently a man has only a desire for one kind of enjoyment, in reality he has all kinds of desires (in a latent state). If one has a predilection to earn money, one must surely have sexual desires and love of fame as well. Money, sex-impulse, and fame—all go together. These cannot be abandoned one by one. If one is really in earnest about giving them all up one has to try to relinquish them all at one time.”
(The Life and Teaching of Sri Brahmajna Ma)
Are we wired that way? I figure many men are, or have been, on the money-sex-fame train, but are women wired that way too? I wouldn’t know. Take Eckhart Tolle, everyone in the spiritual community knows and admires him. His net-worth is up to 80 million by now. Has he been able to stay away from this money-fame-sex energy? It seems so.
I once read about a sex fantasy that someone had; I believe he was a professor. He admitted that he regularly masturbated to the same image, him going to the letter box and reading the Nobel-prize announcement that he had been this year’s winner. A perfect example of the money-sex-fame instinct desiring to be expressed.
Feelings are feelings; they are buried deep into the memory of our body. Just knowing where they come from, or figuring out that they are “irrational” is not good enough. We have to get them out of the system if we want to be free. I believe in doing and discovering. You want money and success, find a worthwhile mission. For sex, find the partner you love.
Life has incredible wisdom. Few realize that we are in a body-mind-world matrix where life is happy to mirror us our inner conflicts back. Life is even more happy to show us that we already possess everything that is meaningful to us. Nothing needs to be given up other than our illusion that we are lacking anything. Life is an invite to spot maya at work and find love instead.
