The 'I' in its purity is experienced in intervals between the two states or two thoughts.
The ‘I’ which rises will also subside. That is the individual ‘I’ or the ‘I’-concept.
That which does not rise will not subside. It is and will be for ever. That is the universal ‘I’, the perfect ‘I’, or realisation of the Self.
Sri Ramana Maharshi
You must observe it too:
Now my body matters and now it’s just a medium to communicate.
Now my problems seem overwhelming and now I am fine.
Now I am in love and now I am over the love of my life.
Now my status matters and now it does not.
How does one silence the personal I-identification? Only when one realizes that it’s not about the body, the problem, the lover, status, etc. Only when one realizes it’s about the S (ilence), E (nergy), L (ove), F (low). It’s about “Being, Consciousness, Bliss” and the realization that we are That. Then it’s natural to stop everything when the personal identification has asserted itself.
Once the villain in a Steven Seagal stopped the fighting and said with a big grin “I feel fear.” He treated it as something new, something he hadn’t experienced in quite a while. Too bad that he had to die anyway because he was fighting Steven Seagal, but the observation is a good one. Start recognizing the deviation from S-E-LF; the moment “Being, Consciousness, Bliss” is crowded out.
