Burn in the present moment

Caroline Knapp wrote two incredible books about alcoholism and anorexia. She struggled with both and died way too young from cancer. I remember one moment in particular when she described eating a yogurt—her only meal for the morning. She carefully spooned her measured portions and enjoyed that control she had over her appetites and looked down on the other “peasants” in the cafeteria as they munched on their food.

Everything is mental. We can even enjoy the power of starving ourselves. Just imagine what kind of problem this is for us spiritual folks as we sort through our desires, aversions and tendencies. How easy it is to get trapped in the accomplishment to be “spiritual.” There is only only solution. We have to burn in the present moment—the good, the bad, the pure and the tainted. Become aware when the “I am special” feeling pops up.
