Tao or Nothing

Don't make me close one more door,
I don't want to hurt anymore.
Stay in my arms if you dare,
must I imagine you there?
Don't walk away from me,
don't walk away from me,
don't you dare
walk away from me!
I have nothing, nothing, nothing,
if I don't have You.
(Whitney Houston, Nothing)

Whitney Houston sums up our spiritual journey pretty well in the perhaps most emotional song of her career, "Nothing". The longer you walk the Way, the more intense gets your irritation with any distraction. To experience peace, love and connectedness is an incredible feeling; why would anyone willingly  depart from it? The journey towards the center of your Self is a path towards holiness. Everything that is not pure love and innocence is perceived as a distraction, so you naturally turn away from it. The little rascal called ego has many tricks to keep you away from Her but eventually pure love shines through no matter where you look. Keep on walking and discover with us that there is no alternative my friend. There is the Tao - Heaven on earth -  and then there is, well, nothing.

Why do the Best die Young?

What are the odds that Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston - arguably the best male and female music stars in history - both die prematurely within a two year interval with no apparent cause other than that they both seemed to have been fed up with life? I had written a note on Whitney Houston before her death and when I stumbled on it today, it seemed a bit stale.

Yes, it is true, the Tao traveler is unlikely to fall into the same trap that all star entertainers fall into, but it is also true that we mostly act in a small circle of influence and we let everyone around us do their thing without imposing ourselves too much on our environment. How different are the star entertainers who encourage many millions of people to project their emotions, fantasies and longings onto them. Only superstars can do that and, whether consciously or subconsciously, they know that they have to pay for this feat. Sure, superstars can age gracefully, Celine Dione would be one example in this direction, but she has also faded it bit. The point of my note is that we need to applaud everybody for their incredible efforts, the superstars as well as the ordinary folks. Everyone does the best they can and no one else knows what their lifetime achievement award really looks like.
Superstars often have talents that others can't match, but sometimes they just accomplish what they do with willpower alone. Madonna is a good example in this direction. Fact of the matter is that you need to have tremendous psychological imbalances inside to generate this hunger for stardom. It is certainly your birthright to start your spiritual journey towards love and peace, but you have no case criticizing anyone for marching into the opposite direction either. Consciously or subconsciously, we all know what our destiny is about and some may have signed up for stirring up others a little. Ironically, it is this psychological imbalance that will in turn start them on their journey. I know this is hard to accept, but we have no right criticizing anyone on anything. Please leave this up to a higher authority. Everyone needs to be applauded, the shooting stars who burn out prematurely as well as all the rest of us who become greater with every year that goes by.

The Rise and Fall of Man

The other day I was listening to Whitney Houston on the radio; it was "I will always love you", a song that probably coined her peak-performance as well vocally, as appearance-wise. How stunning she looked in the Bodyguard movie! We all know what has happened since; these days she seems to be a shadow of her former self. I am asking myself does it have to be like that, has every rise of a giant to be followed by a fall? I hope not.

The Tao is a feedback mechanism which encourages flexibility moment by moment. You would think that if you always follow the cues, you cannot get off-track. When the ego kicks in, and it always does when the success hits you, the Tao's cues also become more shrill. Sure, if you ignore them they will fade over time because this Force is not interested in enforcing a will on you, but if you always remain honest with yourself, you will be able to perceive these cues. Do not mind the success, but be mindful that the "I" does not get the better of you as your stardom rises.

As you are glued to the Tao the "I" naturally steps in the background. In this infinite moment you are truly alive and the personal filter is removed. Who knows, perhaps the "I" sings at that moment ...

Bittersweet memories
that is all I'm taking with me.
So, goodbye. Please, don't cry.
We both know I'm not what you, you need.
