When we wake up there is the feeling of a light switch being flipped. We don’t yet zoom into anything specific—unless we had an intensive dream—we just open our eyes and become aware, without becoming aware of anything specific. That’s the “I am” before it becomes the “I am this or that”.
I have mentioned before that many of my posts come to me in the early morning hours when only “I am” is present. The self that we identify with hasn’t woken up so to speak and I am open to the divine downloads that are always available to us. It is just that we are too busy to receive them.
I have practiced Ramana Maharshi’s self inquiry technique for a while now and have to say, it is getting easier to penetrate the root of the personality identity. The trick is not to look for the answer of, “To whom did this thought occur?”, but to see the questioner dissolve while asking the question.
“I am” is always present. It is us who are too busy to perceive this blessed state. A friend shared this morning the advice, draw a line between need and greed. I would say, presented with need and greed we can ask in either case, to whom does this desire arise, and no line will need to be drawn.
Ask, “Who am I?”, and see what happens.
