Looking for heaven, found the devil in me.
(Florence and the Machine, Shake it Out)
Who exactly are we? Are we our thoughts or the emotions we are feeling? Are we our genes? The chemicals and electric signals in our head, or the ebb and flow of our hormones? Clearly not you will say, there must be more to us: the mind, the soul, the God-connection. Yes, but perhaps we can think of all the biological stuff as the simulation device to experience our existence here on earth. Few people may see it that way, but we spiritual travelers maintain that everything we do or experience has just one purpose, to return back to our Source.
Is there a quiet voice hidden inside us that reminds us of God's existence? And is there a force that wants to keep the separation going? So what exactly keeps us back from experiencing God? The answer is mis-creation and mis-perception. We left the Garden of Eden when we created our own world as we discovered the power to do so. We aspired and perceived to be someone entirely different and with it we lost our God connection. The good news is, we can always go back; all we have to do is to reconcile our own mission statement with God's plan for us. And we need to keep our eyes open, always on the look-out for the stuff that may differ a little from our own agenda.
Once you start digging you are bound to meet a voice that wants to protect its fenced-off reality. You will discover darkness inside that minds when the light shines in. Perhaps that could be the definition of the opaque concept "sin"; it is a voice or action that wants to keep the separation going. A lack of love somewhere hidden inside, driven by avarice, anger, greed, lust or fear. Evil is the verb "to live" spelled backwards. So is there anything that catches your fancy that could in fact be opposed to life? Only you can know what running away from life means for you personally. We all are on a unique mission and only we can figure out what helps our spiritual course and what hinders it. Actually, that's what a spiritual path is all about, opening up to life and God's messengers who help us to recognize love wherever we go.
Our consciousness could perhaps be thought of as light beams in a moving car at night. Places and impressions zoom by and the direction the car is traveling is very much under our control. We can follow the mission of our fenced-off personality or we can follow the Way. On stretches both paths do coincide while on many other occasions they point in opposite directions. Don't be surprised when you find darkness inside, that's what a spiritual path does for you. Don't turn away, have the boldness and conviction to look but don't be taken it by it. The rules of engagement are clear enough, turn the car around when you spot love on the other side of the road. The "devil" is as real as your willingness to cling on to your lack of love. Follow the Way instead and let the light shine in every corner of your being. Along the Way, mis-creation and mis-perception will be soon nothing but a faint memory.
